The British had Hobart’s Funnies as well as less successful entries like the Panjandrum - a ten-foot rocket-driven wheel of explosives. Everyone was working on a nuclear bomb, of course. The Germans worked on Wunderwaffe, including guided missiles, jets, suborbital rocket bombers, and a solar-powered space mirror to burn terrestrial targets. But we aren’t working on anything - that we know of - as revolutionary as a rocket, an atomic bomb, or even radar was back in the 1940s. Sure, we develop better planes, tanks, submarines, and guns. A Churchill Bullshorn plough for clearning minefields - one of Hobart’s “Funnies” Another defining factor is that it doesn’t seem we seek out superweapons anymore. Nor could you dig tunnels right under your captor’s nose. You can’t sneak a fleet of ships across the oceans anymore. The targets get stronger as you progress through the levels, but you get to upgrade your artillery so that it doesn't become too difficult.Historians may note that World War II was the last great “movie war.” In those days, you could do many things that are impossible today, yet make for great movie drama. The airplanes are fighters and bombers from WWII, so shooting them down is easy because they are slow, and they break apart like butterflies being hit with a mallet. The mouse-controls are far too sensitive, but it is possible to turn down your cursor/mouse sensitivity so that you may make your shots. You may collect gold bars in the form of points, which you may then spend on upgrades and further shells. You only have a certain number of shells, which means most of your shots have to hit in order to win the level. The planes break when you shoot them down. The artillery shells you fire are not affected by gravity or the wind, which makes the game a little too simple, but also removes a lot of frustration and learning. WWII: Clear Sky 41 puts you in charge of a large gun that you operate in the first person. The graphics are pretty poor, but they are passable, and you get to shoot down breakable planes with a big gun. WWII: Clear Sky 41 is a surprisingly rewarding game with slightly more depth than it first appears. Softonic review A free artillery game where you shoot down planes
